Poughkeepsie Real Estate

The Town and City of Poughkeepsie are located along the Hudson River, halfway between Albany and New York City. The geographic location of Poughkeepsie allowed it to become a center of commerce for river traffic on the Hudson. Ships would often stop in Poughkeepsie on their way to Albany.

The coming of the rail road and the Mid-Hudson Bridge also helped to make Poughkeepsie a center for business and commerce. At one time, the City of Poughkeepsie served at the Capital of New York State. It was also the place where the United States Constitution was ratified in 1788. Poughkeepsie is home to Vassar and Marist Colleges.

The Town of Poughkeepsie surrounds the City and covers a rather large portion of the western side of Central Dutchess County. The phenomenal growth rate of IBM, with its operations centered in Poughkeepsie, played a significant role in the growth and development of the Poughkeepsie area.

For many years, IBM was the major employer in the Poughkeepsie area. Today there is far more diversification, with many more businesses and employment opportunities. The route 9 corridor has been developing at an exponential rate, with many new hotels, corporate offices, shopping centers, and family restaurants.

Housing is never a problem in the Poughkeepsie area. There are an abundance of single family homes, condos, town homes, and rental properties, throughout the Poughkeepsie area. New property listings become available every day.

If you are a commuter, the Amtrak and the Harlem Rail Lines provide a convenient mode of travel to Albany, White Plains, and New York City. Vassar Brothers and St. Francis Hospital are never more than 15 or 20 minutes from any home in the Poughkeepsie area. St. Francis Hospital is a class II trauma center. Both hospitals are acclaimed for their complete range of medical services.

The surrounding areas of the Hudson Valley also offer a wide variety of cultural diversions. There's the Bardavon Theatre in the City of Poughkeepsie, Mills Mansion in Hyde Park, the Samuel Morse Home, the Roosevelt Museum and Library, Huguenot Village in New Paltz, Norrie Maria for boating on the Hudson, and the Dutchess County Fair Grounds.

You won't want to miss baseball games at Dutchess Stadium; or the outstanding performances at the Center for the Performing Arts in Rhinebeck. For fine dining, there's the Culinary Institute. There are also many excellent restaurants throughout the area.
